FIVE QUESTIONS: SHANNEN DOHERTY
A few weeks ago, we brought you the exclusive first look at “Mari-Kari,” the new animated series from FEARnet, and the series makes its cyberspace premiere Thursday. The anime-inspired webisodes feature Shannen Doherty as the voice of identical twin sisters Mari and Kari; both are adorable and wide-eyed grade-school students, but one of them also happens to be a ruthless ghost who slices and dices anyone who crosses her living sister. Hero Complex contributor Yvonne Villarreal caught up with Doherty for a round of five questions — but the actress asked for your help answering one of them.

YV: You’re no stranger to television: If people don’t know you as Brenda Walsh on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” they know you as Prue Halliwell on “Charmed”… or even as the chick who frightened people on SyFy’s “Scare Tactics.” What prompted you to take on a Web series?
SD: So much interesting content is happening with the Internet nowadays. I mean, it’s a whole new medium and something everyone should be looking seriously into. So I was kind of happy to be approached to tackle something on the Web. Then I read it and I was dying of laughter in the car — someone else was driving and I was dying of laughter reading the script. It’s crazy. It’s as over the top as it gets. I had no idea how it was going to look. None. I went in to lay down my two voices, and it was just a blast.
YV: So which voice was easier for you to do? Mari has this sort of annoying perkiness to her voice, whereas Kari’s is more hoarse.
SD: Interestingly enough, I think Mari’s voice was easier even though Kari’s was more like mine. Mari was so annoying to do; she was driving me crazy, but it was still fun to do something so unlike me. Whereas with Kari, I had to get even more raspy and deeper. I thought I had Kari nailed because her voice was closest to mine — but she was toughest one to do. And there were no real rules as to what they [executive producers Austin Reading and Jim Burns] wanted. They kind of left it very open. I didn’t practice too much. I really kind of wanted to just sit with them in a room. I laid down Mari track to see how far I could go with her. I didn’t know how over the top they wanted it. And they kind of wanted to just do it on the day and experiment and have fun with it. I think that was the right choice. And I have these different voices I’m capable of doing, but you don’t want to fall in love with one voice and then realize it’s not right for the character.
YV: Had you done voice-over work before?
SD: My very first voice-over was when I was 10 years old. Can you believe that? It was [1982’s] “The Secret of NIMH.” Very, very different from this. I was mouse-like and super sweet. Totally different. I definitely couldn’t draw inspiration from that.
YV: Given how enthusiastic you get when talking about it, I assume you liked the finished product. Any plans to bring it back for a second season?
SD: I love this series. It’s amazing. I didn’t even grow up watching cartoons. Now I love “South Park.” It’s clever. It’s smart, dry and super sarcastic. “Mari-Kari” is kind of like that. It’s very cutting-edge. It’s very, very, very funny … in this really horrific, horrific way. But that’s what makes it so unique. I love animation. And since I can’t actually watch horror movies — I’ve never been a huge horror-film person; I can’t stomach it — this was a nice alternative because it’s not just this gory thing with blood and guts flying everywhere. Although, it kind of is. But, I mean, it’s about this relationship between these sisters and how clever the writing is. That’s what attracted me to it.
YV: And it must be fun to live vicariously through Kari. So if Kari was roaming the halls of West Beverly High, who would be the first victim to meet her wrath?
SD: Ha! Wow, she would have a field day there. Hmmm. Who was mean to Brenda? Can we do a poll for the readers to decide?
“Dancing With the Stars” castoff Shannen Doherty might have skipped out on an invite to “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” but she decided to show up for her scheduled appearance on “Live With Regis and Kelly.”
Although Regis Philbin was without his usual sidekick — in her place was “DWTS” judge, Carrie Ann Inaba.
“I have to tell you, after all the seasons we’ve done, your elimination was the most surprising,” Inaba told Doherty and her “DWTS” pro partner Mark Ballas. The judge even added that Doherty’s exit was so shocking that she texted someone, “How did that happen?”
Philbin then put Doherty on the spot, asking her, “Don’t you think you danced better than [Pamela Anderson and her partner]?” Anderson was of course the other star in the hot seat on elimination night, and the first sent to the Bottom Two at the beginning of the show.
Doherty decided to keep it classy, responding, “I think that everybody on the show brings something incredibly unique and different to it.”
The star of “90210″ fame did (briefly) address the “10 million conspiracy theories” circulating on the web that the show is rigged to keep the ratings-drawing lead-footed Kate Gosselin on-board. Doherty acknowledged the existence of the theories, but kept tight-lipped when Regis kept prodding her.
Philbin decided to blame the judges for her boot — namely “that little Italian guy.”
Shannen Doherty claims it takes a lot to surprise her, however she didn’t expect to be the first celebrity participant ousted from Dancing with the Stars’ tenth season.
“I’m never really surprised by anything that happens, but yeah, it was [fellow celebrity-participant Pamela Anderson] and myself in the bottom two and I definitely think that was surprising for both of us,” said Doherty during a Wednesday morning interview on Good Morning America.
The former Beverly Hills 90210 actress her professional partner Mark Ballas were eliminated from Dancing with the Stars’ tenth season during Tuesday night’s first live results show based on the combination of the judges scores they received for their dances on the season’s first two Monday night performance shows and the home viewer votes that were cast immediately following both broadcasts.
While Ballas suffered a knee injury during the dress rehearsal before Monday night’s performance show that Doherty thought would have kept him out of action had the couple continued, he said on GMA that it wasn’t as bad as originally believed.
“There’s no major problems — ACL, MCL damage — none of that. So hopefully it will be able to heal a little bit quicker than we were expecting. So hopefully I’ll be back to dancing on a results show sometime before the end of the season,” said Ballas.
“I was going to have my dad come in and fill-in for me during the training process, but I was going to get out there on Monday regardless.”
“And I was never going to let him get out there on Monday, regardless,” interjected Doherty. “He was told by a doctor to not dance.”
“But I was going to get out there regardless,” replied Ballas.
“Nope,” responded Doherty with a laugh.
Doherty and Ballas were eliminated from Dancing with the Stars even though they had finished in seventh place with 38 out of 60 possible points on the judges’ combined two-week leaderboard and been praised for their improvement during Monday night’s second performance show.
“I thought she did a great job on Monday and I was really happy with the jive. The judges agreed with me that it was the right thing to do,” said Ballas on GMA.
“She had a lot of potential, she danced really well, and for someone who’s never really worked out or danced a step in her life I think she did excellent. So if we would have continued in the competition I would have continued to push her everyday.”
Doherty has previously stated that the only reason she decided to participate in Dancing with the Stars was for her father, who recently suffered a stroke.
“I did do this for him. I got really interesting note and flowers on Sunday from Teri Hatcher, as a matter of fact. I don’t even know her, and she was just talking about how much she was touched by my relationship with my dad,” said Doherty on GMA.
“It’s really touching and a lot of people can relate to it. There’s a lot of people out there whose parents have suffered from something and a lot of people are hurting, and they were able to relate to my story and what I’m going through with my dad. So that was great.”
Despite her early exit, Doherty said her das was still very happy with her performance.
“My dad doesn’t have his speech 100% back yet, but the first words he learned was, ‘I love you.’ So he was crying. He said. ‘I love you. I’m proud of you baby,’” she said.
Ten couples remain in the running for Dancing with the Stars’ tenth-season mirror ball trophy, and Doherty said “everybody’s great” when asked to handicap the competition before singling out NFL star Chad Ochocinco.
“I love Ochocinco. Not only is he an absolute teddy bear, but I think he’s got so much heart and he’s trying really hard,” she said.
“I think the judges have been unnecessarily mean to him. So I’m definitely rooting for Chad.”
Ballas said Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Scherzinger and gold-medal Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek — who have finished in first and second place on the judges’ leaderboard during both of the season’s first two Monday night performance shows — have impressed him, but added it’s too early to tell.
“It’s a great cast this season, so we’ll see how it works out,” he said. “It’s anybody’s at the moment.”
Shannen is in it to win it. However, as far as the typically revealing “Dancing With The Stars” outfits the contestants wear – Shannen said she’s not about to go toe-to-toe with Pamela Anderson.
“She can have that domain as far as I’m concerned. I’m not an exhibitionist at all. I’m a little bit conservative,” she admitted. “And my grandmother is watching this from Mississippi and would kill me if showed too much skin!”

While some celebrities might take on “Dancing with the Stars” for exposure – or a paycheck – Shannen Doherty’s ballroom motivation is much different – and much more personal. On Christmas Day 2009, Shannen’s father, Tom, suffered a massive stroke that left him immobile and able to say little more than “Yes” or “No.” But when the former “90210″ star told him she was offered a spot on “Dancing,” her dad perked up.
“He got really excited and was like, ‘Yeah! Yeah!’” Shannen told Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos during her recent DWTS rehearsal. “And I was like, ‘No! No! No!’” the actress laughed.
During her visit to Shannen’s rehearsal with partner Mark Ballas, Maria also played the actress a clip from a 2007 Access interview where Shannen said she’d never do “Dancing with the Stars.”
“I watch ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and I love it,” she told Access at the time.
“Would you ever consider doing that show?” Access asked.
“No! I’d be way too nervous. I couldn’t handle it,” she said in 2007.
Fast-forward to 2010 and Shannen’s newfound motivation.
“I have a fear of live audiences – a huge, huge fear. It’s really bad. I get hives all over. I hyperventilate,” the actress revealed to Maria. “That’s why I’m saying it’s only for my dad that I’m here and facing my fear.”
And Shannen is hoping that it might motivate her dad to confront his fear.
“There are days when I think anybody in that position with health problems like he’s had forever, you know you give up. And on those days, my mom calls me and I rush over there and I’m like, “OK, I’m in dance clothes — but I could be in street clothes any second now,’” she grinned. “Because of it, he’s gotten a lot better.”
Like the book title French Women Don’t Get Fat, French-educated and slender Shannen doesn’t sweat her diet and exercise routine. Shannen reveals her shocking and unexpected “stay-slim” secrets as well as her favourite go-to designers:
“I don’t do anything,” the actress, who admits she doesn’t like cupcakes, says. “I actually swear to God that I do not do anything. We went to dinner with a couple girls who are walking in fashion shows, and I’m digging into a New York steak, French fries and a cookies and cream soufflé. They’re drinking Perrier, and that’s it. I’m like ‘why aren’t you eating?’ and they’re like [French/foreign accent] ‘well, we have a show tomorrow.’ And I’m like, ‘so you’re not going to eat?’ I have no clue what that’s like.”
She continues, “I’m sure my metabolism is going to change at some point. I’m sure that it’s going to slow down, and I’ll be like ‘damn, why didn’t I go to the gym?’ When I put on five pounds, I guess I’ll work out. Until then, I’m going to enjoy it.”
While we’ll see more of Shannen this year in TV’s Growing the Big One and dramedy Burning Palms, she’s no one-trick pony. Aside from acting, she’s served as editor-in-chief of Pasadena magazine, where she dabbled in art direction and photography. Most recently she lent her eye for fashion to Universal Records, for whom she recently styled a shoot for an upcoming artist.
She credits Dolce and Gabbana, Chanel (“a staple in my closet”), D Squared and the late Alexander McQueen as her favorite designers.
“I think he was a true creative genius,” Shannen says. “We lost somebody incredibly important in fashion. In the world, he defined a time, and kept changing and doing interesting things. We lost that.”
She offers a style tip in the form of hindsight just before the G-Star Raw fashion show begins.
“Make sure that what you’re wearing, you’re not going to look back ten years later and regret that you wore it, like my high-waisted jeans.” Adding, “I like to be very quick,” she says. “Whatever takes me five minutes to get ready is good.”
Despite two divorces and a reputation for being difficult since her 90210 days, Shannen Doherty tells reporters she has no regrets. Now happy with her photographer beau of 1 ½ years Kurt Iswarienko, the 38-year-old actress has found peace, but she halts the interview when it comes to marriage talk.
“We just meld well together,” the petite, cool, guardedly friendly actress says while relaxing downstairs at NYC’s Hammerstein Ballroom last week. One key: Kurt fits in well with her pets, which include dogs and horses. “He gets along great. He’s an easygoing guy, so it all works out.” Thank goodness, she laughs, as they’re very important to her. She tells me, “They’re like my children.”
And children can never get enough adoration from their parents.
“I give them lots of love,” Shannen tells me of her animals. “That’s it. I no longer feed them table scraps, because people come over and the dogs beg and it’s annoying. I don’t do that anymore. It breaks my heart, but you can’t do it. It’s very bad. They get lots and lots of love.”
For the animal-loving Tennessee-born actress, being labeled as a bad girl is a misconception that gives her pause.
“It’s funny,” she says. “I think that in America, a woman with a brain is called a woman with edge, and I think in Europe, a woman with a brain is called a woman with a brain. I think it’s a very different stigma. I don’t think it’s an edge at all. I’m smart and I’m quick, and I like playing smart characters.”
Although Shannen seemed to cultivate a naughty image during her 1990-1994 90210 heyday, her reputation and her reality were far different. She started her career on Little House on the Prairie at age 11, and wound up on Our House by age 15 before making her way to the teen dramedy set in the prestigious zip code.
“I was working during most of my high school years, so I was usually on a set,” she says. “I also went to private French school, and it was very much about academics. It was boys and girls, but there were uniforms. It was strict. Everyone had their own style with the uniforms, like what length was your skirt, did you wear scarves, did you do this, did you do that, tights, knee socks. There were no mean girls. It was a French school. It was heavily, heavily European, and I think everybody was very open-minded, objective and accepting. It wasn’t a judgmental environment at all.”
Shannen Doherty has revealed that she is a huge fan of Lady GaGa. Former Beverly Hills 90210 star Doherty said that she would proudly wear any crazy outfit designed by the ‘Poker Face’ singer.
Doherty told People magazine:
“I would wear anything she made, only if she was right next to my side. If she walked in with me somewhere I’d do it! I think she’s fantastic and she’s amazing. What she does, she does and I love that she doesn’t care what others really think. She rocks it out with full confidence.”
Talking about her own fashion sense, she added:
“My style really is whatever I feel comfortable wearing. That’s my style. I’m all about the material and how it fits. Some of my favourites are Zac Posen, who has some amazing collections right now. I’m always a die-hard Chanel girl. I like it because it’s just classic. It doesn’t get any better with Chanel.”
